I would hope that get's looked at further by the School, parents and public.
Not allowing students, "Freedom of thought, opinion and expression" isn't what teaching is about. If the assignment stated, "Answers must agree with teachers opinions" that's one thing...but if the assignment is "open" to students opinions that would be "censorship" and "thought control".
Look forward to updates on this one.

Recently an entry was posted to Facebook, about an essay assignment at Liberty Bell High School (Methow Valley School District). The following is an excerpt from the post, which has since been deleted:

A friend with a 9th grader at Liberty Bell High School got an F for his essay on "Why I support Black Lives Matter". He said he didn't support BLM because all lives matter and every human being despite race or religion matters. The teacher said he needed to rewrite the essay. Will he have to rewrite it until he finally agrees with something he disagrees with?
Do you see what is going on here?
When did we get to the point in education where everyone needs to agree and believe the same thing? What happened to open mindedness, acceptance and diversity of thought being a positive thing?
When one side can freely express their thoughts and the other side cannot, we have significant issues that need to be looked at.

A number of responses in the comments had pointed out that they thought the failing grade was appropriate because the student did not complete the assignment as given. Maybe, maybe.

Some claim that the point of such an essay assignment is to get students to think. I think there’s a pertinent question that could be asked at this point.

Has this high school teacher also given essay assignments such as “Why I Support President Donald Trump”, at any point over the past four years?

I’m pretty sure that I already know the answer to that.
