Spy watching

OKANOGAN COUNTY – The “citizen informer”. It’s very common under totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. After all, there often aren’t enough secret police to watch everyone, all the time. But if everyone in such a dystopian society is watching everyone else, and reporting the arbitrary crimes “to the authorities” in return for an “atta-boy” pat on the head, and feelings of virtuousness and overall betterness, well, it’s so much easier for those in control at the top. Never mind all those at the bottom living in constant terror for the pounding at their door.

There’s nothing like salving your own terror by watching some poor sap that you denounced get hauled off to the re-education camps – or worse. But, of course, those self-righteous ones who want that sanctioned approval – and aren’t particular about who it comes from, or even the frightened cowards who just want to point an accusing finger elsewhere so that maybe they can be the last ones on the chopping block, are certainly not welcomed with open arms among the people that the wanna-be tyrants fear.

That’s why such snitches must do their dirty work in secret, in the shadows. Watching. Listening. And then put on their shocked face along with the huddled group of whispering peons on the street corner, as a neighbor is dragged out and beaten – metaphorically or not – by the jack-booted Stasi.

For that to work, the informers need their anonymity. By denying it to them, perhaps we can stop going further down this unpleasant path that we’re all on. This article contains info on those who were foolishly proud enough of their informant work in their own community, to attach their name or other identifying information to their accusations. Some wanted to vicariously hear the results of the punishment that was administered, and others were eagerly willing to provide more dedicated (and creepy) snitch information such as photos or video. Other complainers, however, were less foolish, and submitted their snitch reports more or less anonymously.

But if you are an anonymous snitch, you’ll have to wonder: will some uncaring and incompetent government bureaucrat unintentionally release an identifying piece of your information, even though you desired full anonymity? Will a neighbor be able to piece some tidbits of separated information together and prove that you are the local snitch on the block? Will a business owner remember you on that particular day, and connect you and your information together with your hysterical complaint?

Interesting questions to ponder for some among us.

Meanwhile, below is the list of potentially identifiable people who made over 85 local complaints to the state, which were part of 473 total complaints received against businesses and individuals within Okanogan County, between March 25th, 2020, through January 18th, 2021. Statewide, there were nearly 90,000 reports for that time period. These informant reports of real or imagined violations of Inslee's edicts, were submitted largely through the Governor's "Report a Safe Start Violation" form and its previous iterations. All data submitted is subject to release under Washington state public transparency laws.

Shockingly, a handful of complaints are reporting churches, as if that doesn’t have quite horrible historical parallels. The Sheriff’s Office is also the target of a number of complaints – largely because they refused to be mindless enforcers for Inslee. A Washington State Patrol officer was also the subject of a complaint. There’s also a complaint from an official Okanogan County government email address – was that one officially sanctioned? Sent on work time? Then, there are several fake reports for closed businesses or empty buildings, but which would require local knowledge to dismiss immediately – kudos for those reports maybe costing the state apparatus a bit of time to investigate.

There are apparently complaints that were filed with the state by business competitors trying to harm each other – because that’s how you build a better society. And, of course, the Governor's informant reporting system is just perfect for people with an ongoing feud with certain business owners – you can now get the state to deal out your revenge!

Copious amounts of fear, and even hysteria, are on tap with the submitted observations and details of many complaint reports. But what is most upsetting is those clearly malicious and vindictive individuals trying their darndest to get particular local businesses fined. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

If you couldn’t already figure it out, just about every business in the county that has contact with “the public” has likely been reported at least once – regardless of whether or not they want to strictly follow all the Governor’s arbitrary rules – because “someone is always watching” and it only takes a moment for a slipup to be noted and reported. There is no relaxing allowed, at all. Ever.

However, the great majority of complaints were found to be unsubstantiated by whichever state agency was assigned to investigate them. The state just had to spend a lot of taxpayer money and unproductive work hours to figure that out.

Governor Inslee is ultimately responsible for this fiasco. Encouraging and enabling this sort of widespread snitching to the government is breaking our society. We should stop all of it.

Those identifiable individuals that are reporting our local businesses to the State Ministry of COVID Rule Compliance are listed here. This information comes from public records.

Please do not threaten these people. It could be a criminal offense.

No agency would continue with the permit process for them. I was doing my job. View askew asked me to get the clarificatin so they could continue.. Dont put me on blast without getting the truth...

Thank you for your comment Sharma1913. I checked this and removed the callout in the article for your email address.

However, the reason that you are in this list is because the state did not classify your report as a request for guidance on the rules (which is a separate list), but instead as a complaint of a "non-essential" business operating, which was then sent to LNI for investigation.

Hi Court,
I want you to know that, even though you reminded people that threatening others is criminal, the way you wrote this has given some the push they needed to insight violence.
Do you really want anything violent to happen to these people you have listed? Because that's what is seeming to lead to.

What if they were not trying to shut businesses down, but to make employees safer? OR what I am more so wondering, what if someone's information was used, but they didn't actually send in the report?

I am all for doing what is right, but giving out people's personal information online is NOT it.
OKVALLEYPROUD replied the topic: #49 4 years 2 months ago
Portraying concerned individuals as "informants" and publicly posting their personal details so others can harass them is just wrong.
These people observed poor safety practices that endangered them and others. These people are concerned for their communities, and chose to report workplaces and businesses with the intent to save lives. Claiming that this is somehow proof of an Inslee totalitarian agenda is just an attempt to worsen the divide in our community, and untrue.
This is a list of people who want their local businesses to stay open, who want to be able to go to work, who depend on local business. However, they know that if safety practices like masking and distancing are not followed, their neighbors, friends, and family are risking their (and others) lives.
By reporting, they are trying to keep our stores and schools safe.
At this point, regardless of your opinion on COVID, we all know someone who has died or become critically ill.
Portraying this as "snitching for Inslee" is a childish argument. posting personal information is clearly an attempt to provoke harassment.

Worsening the divide in our community is the last thing we need right now.

Kali18, Thank you for your comment. But if mere words can incite someone to violence then the situation was already so precarious that anything could have set it off. And indeed I see that is the case here - as I have said, encouraging and enabling this sort of reporting to the government is breaking our society. Further, I am just the messenger here. If you are truly concerned about this whole situation, then you need to talk to the people who are actually responsible for all of it - which is Governor Jay Inslee, and anyone working under his direction.

>What if they were not trying to shut businesses down, but to make employees safer?

I don't think trying to make employees "safer" by starting a process that could lead to the shut down the businesses that employ them - or at the least, greatly increasing their operating costs - is a good, much less rational, strategy. Long-term unemployment is a significant danger to one's health as well.

>OR what I am more so wondering, what if someone's information was used, but they didn't actually send in the report?
I doubt this happened at all.

>I am all for doing what is right, but giving out people's personal information online is NOT it.

These people willingly gave out their contact information to the state in the first place, and they also expressly checked a checkbox that said that they understood that it could all be publicly released. Where is the problem?

OKVALLEYPROUD, thanks for your comment, but I don't agree with your "virtuous reporter" argument. And masking and distancing are not actual safety practices when dealing with an airborne virus. If anyone thinks their life is endangered by being in public or shopping at stores, then they should stay home and shouldn't be in public or shopping. That's a personal health decision made via a personal risk assessment and it's fine. But they don't get to force everyone else who doesn't agree to the same level as them, to comply with their own level of health decisions, burdening others so that they can then do all their normal activities and "feel safe".

Attacking the small businesses of this community by reporting them to the state regulatory agencies is not how to "keep local businesses open" that everyone in this community relies on, and also doesn't "save any lives" whatsoever.

> Worsening the divide in our community is the last thing we need right now.

Tell it to Jay Inslee.

"The remaining study found the use of masks was strongly protective, with a risk reduction of 70% for those that always wore a mask when going out (13)"

Need I go on and send more studies?
Masks and distancing strongly effect risk of transmission. This is a fact.

Thank you for responding, though, and providing your rationale. I still don't agree with you, however. This article should be removed.

I have no connection or affiliation with Governor Inslee, and I don't agree with every decision he has made. However, I see the overall process of introducing policies intended to slow the spread of a virus (that for some people, is deadly) as a harsh necessity.

I know I can't change your opinions, but I strongly believe that this article is damaging, provoking, and misguided. Concerned people aren't "snitches".

Bravo for writing this article. We need more liberty loving, reporters like you in every county in this nation. I see these snitches absolutely no different than the brownshirts that terrorized and helped implement tyranny and murder under Hitler. The brownshirts happily helping to install tyranny will be viewed in the future just like the brownshirts of old.

OKVALLEYPROUD,
>Masks and distancing strongly effect risk of transmission. This is a fact.

Well, mask studies for the past 40 years have found that they don't do anything positive for source control and may even be harmful. Isn't it weird that suddenly halfway into 2020 everything we knew about the effectiveness of masks suddenly reversed - with no time to actually do any real science on the subject - and now we can just ignore everything that came before, and even certain ones that came after?

Your "strongly [a]ffect" opinion is straight up false. The seminal study on “source control” for masks is Neil Orr’s from 1981 ; it stands uncontroverted despite 40 years of attempts. This was a random controlled trial in Operating Rooms where everyone involved was a trained professional. There is no better evidence available than the removal of confounding factors such as compliance with wearing and procedural factors. In addition Cochrane Review, arguably the best medical minds in the world when it comes to meta-reviews , the highest form of evidence available, found weak to no evidence of efficacy for masks. What’s worse is that they found weak to no evidence even when the mask in question was an N95 and the wearer was a medical worker.

Then there’s the Danish mask study specific to Covid-19 which multiple medical journals tried to suppress. Annals finally published it, trying to gloss over the results. The results were damning; there was no statistically significant improvement in outcomes. Even worse, when the researchers applied retrospective analysis to limit the examination to only those who were allegedly “highly compliant” with protocol the relative risk ratio got worse rather than better, strongly implying that mask use might be harmful rather than protective.

My cites here are all RCT's or meta reviews, which provide high bars for scientific evidence - and actual science being done. Your linked paper appears to be a "narrative review" of certain cherry-picked papers that support the author's foregone conclusions. And the study that you cited is a type of observational study that provides a lesser standard of scientific evidence - and the general rule in any scientific field is that observational studies can never prove anything, but they can disprove your hypothesis.

Then there's the obvious question: if masks worked near as well as you say, then why are we still in this now fully a year afterwards?

>Thank you for responding, though, and providing your rationale. I still don't agree with you, however. This article should be removed.

That's fine, and we can certainly disagree. But the article won't be removed.

>I have no connection or affiliation with Governor Inslee, and I don't agree with every decision he has made. However, I see the overall process of introducing policies intended to slow the spread of a virus (that for some people, is deadly) as a harsh necessity.

There were many deaths caused by deadly viruses present with us pre-2020 with influenza and ILI. Why didn't you see this "harsh necessity" in 2018, which was a higher flu death year, or any year previous? Why do you only worry about people dying in 2020, and not the many decades previous?
Psoare replied the topic: #63 4 years 2 months ago
Court - I think OKVALLEYSTRONG makes some valid points, which you seem to summarily dismiss. The research that is linked to is sound. Your citations, on the other hand, are a bit dubious. Your link to the Danish mask study specific to Covid-19, which you characterize as having been heroically published after multiple evil medical journals tried to suppress it: The study's own stated Objective: "To assess whether recommending surgical mask use outside the home reduces wearers' risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection in a setting where masks were uncommon and not among recommended public health measures". IN A SETTING WHERE MASKS WERE UNCOMMON. Hey, here's an idea: require EVERYONE to wear masks in, like, I don't know, BUSINESSES. News flash: Masks don't protect you from getting the virus all that much. But they do work to keep the infected from spreading it to others.

You cite two other publications, which apparently meet your standard of "real science":

A 40 year old limited study in an English Hospital, which over all these years has only garnered 120-odd citations in other literature, and

The Cochrane Reviews study where the authors' conclusions were "The high risk of bias in the trials, variation in outcome measurement, and relatively low compliance with the interventions during the studies hamper drawing firm conclusions and generalising the findings to the current COVID‐19 pandemic."

And yet you accuse others of cherry picking the literature.

You ask "if masks worked near as well as you say, then why are we still in this now fully a year afterwards?" It's simple. Because of people like you. People who refuse to wear masks in public. The "liberty loving" self-proclaimed patriots that are worsening and prolonging this pandemic, that are in fact helping to deepen this tragic event and push us into ever deepening economic peril. They're patriotically helping to bring about the demise of America. But God forbid we think of others rather than spouting individualistic rhetoric.

One other point that overly civil OKVALLEYPROUD made and that I agree with: "I know I can't change your opinions". Because I suspect you get off on inciting conflict and hatred through your vitriolic, divisive, opinionated language.

Court replied the topic: #64 4 years 2 months ago
Psoare, thanks for your comments.

>IN A SETTING WHERE MASKS WERE UNCOMMON

But it's pretty apparent by this one that you don't understand how or why that observational study is first of all, a scientific study.

>The Cochrane Reviews study where the authors' conclusions were...

Yes, and now you also know the scientific issues with the studies that were previously cited by OKPROUD. This is because this is biological science, attempting a control group, on humans, in a free country, that respects medical ethics, etc. Now go back to that 40 year old English RCT. Do you understand just a little better what it did and WHY it's important?

>The "liberty loving" self-proclaimed patriots that are worsening and prolonging this pandemic, that are in fact helping to deepen this tragic event and push us into ever deepening economic peril.

"Worsening AND prolonging"? It can't be both. In fact, OKPROUD was saying there that the Governor's policies, including mask mandates, were to "slow the spread", and indeed that was the initial justification for them earlier last year. If you slow the spread, then you prolong the entire process of people being infected with the virus before sufficient numbers have immunity to it so the spread is not increasing. So it certainly can't be the non-maskers that are prolonging this pandemic. The non-maskers would absolutely like to open everything up and return to normal... but it's the one-size-fits-all mandates and restrictions by the Governor that are pushing us all into ever-deepening economic peril.

I'm old enough to remember back to spring of last year, when everyone that didn't wear masks was supposed to be long dead by now. In fact, if "magic masks" are truly such a shield and protection, then by now - after a full year - everyone who hasn't habitually worn a mask has already long-gotten the virus and recovered. They're all pretty much immune by this point. Now we're just waiting on all you maskers as you SLOOOOOWWWWLLY but inevitably get it and pass it on amongst yourselves. So hurry it up, we have small businesses that need to open and finances to rebuild. Take your mask off and breathe deep.

Hi Bruce,
I don't know which person you are on the list, but this is public transparency data obtained from the state. This data is complete and no one will be removed from it.

If, in the future, you would like to NOT appear on such lists, then please do not report local businesses to the state.
